Enter the Activities Through Aldgate, EC3
Aldgate is located in the central area of London, within the very City of London, and is the easternmost entrance through the London Wall which leads to the East End of London. The gate itself to which the name refers is one built and rebuilt way back in the 1100s and completely reconstructed in the 1600s. It had defensive properties between the 13th and 17th century, but it was eventually built only as a good design and was less functional.
Today Aldgate is a City ward, mostly dominated by brokers and insurance agents, with many major buildings in relation to them, such as the Lloyd’s Register building, a business service organisation; the commercial skyscrapers of the Willis Building and 30 St Mary Axe (or The Gherkin as it is more commonly referred to as); and the London Metal Exchange building.
The area does not shun religion as here you can see and visit three churches that stand here from the 16th century: St Andrew Undershaft, St Katherine Cree, and St Botolph’s. Also in Aldgate you can see the oldest synagogue in the United Kingdom: the Bevis Marks Synagogue, standing here since 1699.
